Security Screening
Security screening involves the application of various methods and means, either individually or in combination. The equipment used may include: walk-through metal detectors, handheld metal detectors, X-ray scanners, explosives detection systems, explosives trace detection systems, liquid explosive detection system, body scanners, and explosives detection dogs.
These methods may also include measures such as: physical inspection, random screening (automatically generated by security equipment), removal of footwear, removal of electronic devices from baggage, security interviews, or restriction on the transport of liquids.
Depending on the level of alert or destination, tighter security measures may be applied.
Preparing for security screening
Please follow the instructions of the security staff throughout the security screening process.
Before conducting the control with security equipment (metal detector gates/body scanners), place your items in the specially designed trays:
- outdoor clothing: jacket, coat, overcoat, trench coat, blazer etc.
- headgear
- all objects from your pockets: phone, keys, wallet, coins, lighter etc.
- other metal-containing items: watch, bracelets, belt etc.
We recommend that small and/or lightweight items, such as scarves, documents, eyeglasses, watches, jewelry, hats etc. be placed inside your baggage or underneath the baggage placed in trays, to prevent them from falling into the X-ray equipment.
Remove from your baggage all electronic/electrical equipment (laptop, tablet etc.) and other items such as chargers, adapters, external batteries, cables and dispose of them separately, in specially designed trays.
If you fly from International Airports such as ”Henri Coanda” Bucharest, Bucharest Baneasa ”Aurel Vlaicu”, ”Avram Iancu” Cluj-Napoca, ”Traian Vuia” Timisoara, Craiova or Sibiu, the removal of electronic/electric devices from the baggage is no longer necessary. Those airports’ equipment allows security screening of the items placed under the baggage. However, in certain operational circumstances, the security staff may request that electronic devices be placed separately from the rest of your baggage.
Transport conditions for liquids, aerosols or gels in carry-on baggage may vary depending on the airport where the security check takes place. For more detailed information, please check the section “Transport conditions for liquids”.
The use of metal detector gates, body scanners and body check can also involve footwear removal.
Inform security staff about having a prosthesis, orthosis or any type of medical device.
If passing through a metal detector gate or body scanner is medically contraindicated, inform the security staff in order to adapt the control methods accordingly.
Metal detectors gate screening
If an alarm is triggered when passing through the gate frame, security staff will use different control methods to clarify the alarm, such as manual screening, the use of portable metal detectors, explosive trace detection equipment or body scanners.
NOTE: There may be situations in which you may be subject to a security screening even if the metal detector gate did not trigger an alarm.
You can ask the security staff (due to religious or medical reasons etc.) for the manual screening operation to take place in a private space.
Body scanner screening
Body scanners are devices that do not emit ionizing radiation and allow the detection of prohibited items hidden under clothing or on the body such as explosives, firearms or sharp objects.
Advanced imaging technology uses a generic avatar without displaying physical passenger identification features such as the image below.
If the scanner triggers an alarm, security staff will use different control methods to clarify the alarm, such as manual screening, the use of portable metal detectors or explosive trace detection equipment.
NOTE: There may be situations in which you may be subject to a security screening even if the scanner did not trigger an alarm.
If you refuse the body scanner screening, you will be subject to a security screening using other control methods.
Carry-on baggage screening
- Baggage is controlled using X-ray scanning equipment, but there may be situations where security staff can perform a physical screening of the contents for clarification.
- If the baggage contains valuables or other objects that you do not want to be visible to other passengers, inform the security staff to ensure confidentiality.
Finishing security screening
- Please pay special attention to the recovery of all items that you have presented at the security screening and notify the security staff if you identify an item that is not yours.
- For baggage repacking and personal property recovery from the control trays, go to the dedicated spaces, located behind the control filters.
Checked baggage screening
Baggage is controlled using X-ray scanning equipment, but there may be situations where security staff can perform a physical screening of the contents for clarification. In this case, it is necessary to report to the checkpoint.
