Security Screening

Security screening involves the application of various methods and means, either individually or in combination. The equipment used may include: walk-through metal detectors, handheld metal detectors, X-ray scanners, explosives detection systems, explosives trace detection systems, liquid explosive detection system, body scanners, and explosives detection dogs.

These methods may also include measures such as: physical inspection, random screening (automatically generated by security equipment), removal of footwear, removal of electronic devices from baggage, security interviews, or restriction on the transport of liquids.

Depending on the level of alert or destination, tighter security measures may be applied.

Preparing for security screening

Follow the instructions of the security staff..

Before conducting the control with security equipment (metal detector gates/body scanners), remove all objects from your pockets (phone, keys, wallet, coins, lighter etc.).

We recommend that you remove all liquids and electronic/electrical equipment and other items such as chargers, adapters, external batteries, cables from your baggage and dispose of them separately, in specially designed trays.

NOTE: An exception to the above rule applies to the International Airports "Avram Iancu" Cluj Napoca, "Traian Vuia" Timisoara, Craiova and Sibiu, where the X-ray equipment in the airport allows security screening of all electronics without having to remove them from the baggage.

Remove outdoor clothing (jacket, coat, overcoat, trench coat etc.), headgear and other metal- containing items (watch, belt etc.) and place them in specially designed trays.

The use of metal detector gates and body scanners can also involve footwear removal.

Inform security staff about having a prosthesis, orthosis or any type of medical device.

Follow security staff instructions on when and how to perform security screening with a metal detector gate or a body scanner.

If passing through a metal detector gate or body scanner is medically contraindicated, inform the security staff in order to adapt the control methods accordingly.

Metal detectors gate screening

If an alarm is triggered when passing through the gate frame, security staff will use different control methods to clarify the alarm, such as manual screening, the use of portable metal detectors, explosive trace detection equipment or body scanners.

NOTE: There may be situations in which you may be subject to a security screening even if the metal detector gate did not trigger an alarm.

You can ask the security staff (due to religious or medical reasons etc.) for the manual screening operation to take place in a private space.

Body scanner screening

Body scanners are devices that do not emit ionizing radiation and allow the detection of prohibited items hidden under clothing or on the body such as explosives, firearms or sharp objects.

Advanced imaging technology uses a generic avatar without displaying physical passenger identification features such as the image below.

If the scanner triggers an alarm, security staff will use different control methods to clarify the alarm, such as manual screening, the use of portable metal detectors or explosive trace detection equipment.

NOTE: There may be situations in which you may be subject to a security screening even if the scanner did not trigger an alarm.

If you refuse the body scanner screening, you will be subject to a security screening using other control methods.

Carry-on baggage screening

  • Baggage is controlled using X-ray scanning equipment, but there may be situations where security staff can perform a physical screening of the contents for clarification.
  • If the baggage contains valuables or other objects that you do not want to be visible to other passengers, inform the security staff to ensure confidentiality.

Finishing security screening

  • Please pay special attention to the recovery of all items that you have presented at the security screening and notify the security staff if you identify an item that is not yours.
  • For baggage repacking and personal property recovery from the control trays, go to the dedicated spaces, located behind the control filters.

Checked baggage screening

Baggage is controlled using X-ray scanning equipment, but there may be situations where security staff can perform a physical screening of the contents for clarification. In this case, it is necessary to report to the checkpoint.
