Restrictions regarding liquids

Liquids (LAGs – liquids, aerosols, and gels) include: pastes, lotions, creams, liquid/solid mixtures, contents of pressure vessels, gels and other items of similar consistency.

Examples of LAGs:

  • cosmetics: toothpaste, hair gel, perfume, shaving foam, shampoo/hair conditioner, face/body cream/lotion, hairspray, hair mousse, sprays of any kind, mascara, foundation, liquid lipstick etc.;
  • beverages: soft drinks, alcohol, syrups, water etc.;
  • food: soup, oil, honey, yoghurt, cream, humus, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, cream cheese, eggplant/fish egg salad, protein shakes, jam, compote, liquid whipped cream etc.

Without being exhaustive, the above list includes some examples of items that can be included in the "LAGs" category. Depending on the criteria described in the dedicated section - "What are the liquids allowed in the cabin baggage " -, you can assess whether you are allowed to carry them in your cabin baggage.

What are the liquids allowed in the cabin baggage?

The following categories of LAGs may be allowed in the aircraft cabin, following their separate presentation to security staff and security screening:

  1. LAGs packed individually in up to 100 ml containers/ the equivalent in quantity all fitting within a single 1-liter sealed clear plastic bag (with a press-closure or zip-lock system), are allowed in the cabin of an aircraft.
  2. A passenger is allowed to have only one such bag. Exceptions are the International Airports "Avram Iancu" Cluj Napoca, "Traian Vuia" Timisoara, Craiova and Sibiu, where there is no obligation for liquids in containers with a capacity of up to 100 ml to be deposited in resealable bags.

    Containers with a capacity of more than 100 ml, even if partially filled, are not accepted for carriage in the aircraft cabin.

  3. LAGs with a capacity of more than 100 ml which, during the trip, are to be used for medical purposes or special dietary needs are allowed in the carry-on baggage.
  4. A medical certificate or letter confirming the need to use the medicines may be helpful, but it is not mandatory.

  5. Liquid baby food with a capacity of more than 100 ml is allowed.
  6. LAGs packed in a STEB (Security Tamper-Evident Bag). STEB is the bag received from shops in the secure area of an airport or in the cabin of an aircraft when purchasing liquids, inside of which the proof of its purchase from such an environment (cash receipt) is visibly displayed. This bag has a single-use seal so that after the insertion of the LAGs and the cash receipt inside the bag, any intervention on the STEB seal entails the cancellation of the criteria for allowing the products in the cabin of an aircraft. When transiting or being transferred to another destination, remember to ask the shop assistant to put LAGs into a STEB.
  7. Transporting disinfectants (liquids, gels, soaps) or items such as disinfectant wipes or similar solutions in carry-on baggage is allowed even in containers of more than 100 ml, provided that the total quantity does not exceed 250 ml. Containers containing more than 70% alcohol are allowed with the approval of the airline you are traveling with.
  8. Note: If the liquids you intend to carry in your carry-on baggage fall to meet the above- mentioned requirements, you will have to carry them in your checked baggage.
