SRI Points Out: 20,907 individuals during 2004 - 2016
31 May 2018
Considering public debates on the number of national security warrants requested by SRI during 2004 - 2016, the Press Office points out the following:
From December 11, 2004 (when the Law no. 535/2004 entered into force) to February 16, 2016 (until issuance of the Romanian Constitutional Court decision), the total number of national security warrants (initial, extended, and supplementary warrants) requested by the Romanian Intelligence Service amounted to 28,784, out of which 9,292 were initial warrants.
The rights and liberties of 20,907 individuals were restricted in compliance with the law, according to the authorization issued by the judges of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.
Those measures were extended by 3 months each, under the law, in the case of 17,182 individuals.
Furthermore, SRI requested additions to the measures initially ordered by the court in the case of 16,175 individuals, out of the 20,907 who had been the subjects of initial warrants.
It is worth mentioning that this data was provided to the SRI Oversight Committee in November 2017, at the Committee's request.
